Martinus’ Great War – A moving story about courage, friendship and hope in dark times
Antwerp, 1943. While the persecution of the Jews rages in full force, Martinus’ mother sends him out to gather wood. In a desert- ed grove, he encounters Esther, a Jewish girl on the run. Her family has been arrested by the Gestapo — she is alone, frightened, and nowhere is safe anymore.
What begins as a chance encounter grows into a deep friendship between two young people, each with their own background, be- liefs and fears. When Martinus is also forced into hiding, they flee together to the countryside, where a cautious love blossoms in si- lence.
In this moving story, the author provides a poignant insight into the lives of people in hiding during the Second World War. Amidst betrayal, deportations and loss of identity, hope still manages to seep through. The power of mutual respect and humanity forms the backbone of this book.
Martinus’s Great War is more than a war story — it is a universal call for tolerance and a reminder of the importance of continuing to fight for peace. All facets of war in one’s own country are cov- ered: hiding, resistance, collaboration, repression and, above all, humanity.
